Columbus, Ohio - July 29, 2009 - Twelve Safelite AutoGlass® employees travel to England this week to compete alongside colleagues from 18 other countries in the Mazda London Triathlon. All 12 were selected to join the team, from more than 7,700 Safelite AutoGlass® employees. Each athlete will race individually or as part of a relay of swimmers, cyclists and runners. The race is an Olympic distance triathlon: one mile swim, 25 mile bike, ending with a 6.2 mile run.
Last year, more than 600 Belron® employees from around the world took part in the London Triathlon and raised more than $730,000 for Ma'Afrika Tikkun. Belron® has been involved in the triathlon for seven years and this is the third year that Safelite AutoGlass® has sent a team to compete. The Safelite® athletes will present a check to Ma'Afrika Tikkun upon completion of the event for $100,000, which includes more than $37,000 in sponsorship money collected by the athletes themselves. The remainder of the donation is made up of contributions by company leaders and a corporate gift.
"We are excited that this team of associates will be representing our U.S. division overseas," said Tom Feeney, president and chief executive officer of Belron® US, parent company of Safelite AutoGlass®. "This is a wonderful event for a good cause, and it's a great opportunity for this team to meet our Belron® family from around the globe."
Safelite® pays for the travel expenses of the participants. Thousands of athletes are expected to compete in the Triathlon August 1st and 2nd in London.
