More than Half of Football Fans Would Skip Life Event for Game according to the Safelite AutoGlass “Travel Well Football Fans” Consumer Study

Don’t mess with football season: that’s the message heard loud and clear in a new study sponsored by Safelite AutoGlass® in which more than half of football fans would skip an important event if it conflicted with the biggest game of the season.

More than 55% of fans would skip a graduation to attend the biggest football game of the season, according to a recent Safelite poll.

As a sponsor of various professional and collegiate teams around the country, Safelite AutoGlass understands that among sports fans, there are certain programs that “travel well.” They’re organized, they’re committed, and at away games, their fans often outnumber the home fans. But there’s also an art in travelling to and from home games as well. Tailgating requires careful planning, creative packing, and lots of honored traditions. To understand just how far fans will go to support their teams, Safelite partnered with Kelton Research to poll more than 1,000 Americans. The study revealed 53% of football fans would miss at least one event to attend the biggest game of the season. Of those:

  • 55% of football fans would miss a friend or relative’s graduation to attend the biggest game of the season
  • 54% of these diehard fans would skip a family reunion
  • 30% would miss a wedding
  • 25% would skip a funeral

Additional points of interest:

  • Fans are willing to drive the distance to see their favorite teams with 26% driving four or more hours.
  • 59% of those football fans would give up something for six months if it guaranteed their top team would win their biggest game of this year. For example:
    • 44% would give up beer
    • 23% would give up their favorite food
    • 4% would give up their salary
